People could be helping with this problem very simply by keeping a hive of their own. I mean, assuming you have the space for one of course, since I realize not everybody has a yard. Years ago, a partner I had was very interested in this, so we tried it out.
I was initially really against it since I am allergic to bee stings and have landed more than once in the ER in my life from them. But, the project actually cured me of my phobia about bees and helped me learn so much about them that I love keeping them in my life now. We got nearly all our supplies from one store local to us. They were fantastic at educating us on how to begin and providing support.
Having just one small hive in the back yard has also helped us not only have fantastic amounts of wonderful honey to share with friends and neighbors, it has also helped a lot of flowers return to the neighborhood. We also invested in feeders for hummingbirds, which are another amazing source for pollination and really help bees thrive. 🙂
