I’m pretty sure this is a work.
I’d like to hope so but “Take one of the English commentators who the primary audience doesn’t care about and probably don’t know, and the secondary audience knows but don’t care much about, act like a complete tit live on the air and shoot on one of the biggest companies in our industry during a period in which we are directly engaged in long-term business together and piss people off” is a real weird angle to be working lmao.
Edit: And he also made some kinda cancer comment about Phantasmo apparently during his commentary, and thats NJ’s own dude lol.
I could only find a few clips in Japanese, so I had no idea. But looking in those comments, it must have been pretty rough.
Charlton referred to Khan as a “money mark” during Kenny Omega and Gabe Kidd’s co-main event match in an apparent attempt to add some fuel for an AEW vs. NJPW angle. Among other comments, he also questioned what Kazuchika Okada, Jay White and Will Ospreay have done since signing with AEW and unfavorably compared the Continental Classic to the G1 tournament.
The 41-year-old Charlton shared a picture of himself with Omega after that match, but later deleted another tweet where he attempted to explain himself. As of now, he has not commented publicly on this latest development.
Tony Schiavone (in a now deleted tweet to Chris Charlton): Hey @reasonjp speaking for all of us in AEW, GFY. And speaking for all of us who have been around you, take a shower once in a while.
It was pretty bad, I switched to Japanese commentary
I’ve always preferred the Japanese commentary, even if I only know like 4 Japanese words. That was largely cause of Kevin Kelly of course but it just kinda stuck lol.
I didn’t hear them as I was listening to the Japanese commentary but apparently Chris went into business for himself a bit, seemingly during the Kidd/Omega match. Rocky even on screen kinda gave him a clue to calm down apparently.
Might have worked himself into a shoot trying to do the ‘defend NJPW as a commentator’ angle but either way…
I’m watching New Years Dash right now, and at least two wrestlers have approached commentary and asked Walker why he was alone, and Walker’s just like “best not say too much about that!”
CC leaned a bit too far into the “big-money TK stealing our toys” mindset during Dynasty, and was making snippy comments in an us-vs-them fashion for most of the night. He apologized for getting too heated after the main event, so he must’ve got an earful at some point in the show. I don’t remember any specific examples of him going too far, but he was very much team NJPW throughout his call.
I missed this, but I do somewhat recall Rocky saying something. Granted I was half asleep playing State of Decay 2 with my girlfriend while watching so my attention span was negative lol
