I tried putting the name on my Microsoft account as “FUCK MICROSOFT” but it said “Your name can’t include special characters.” changing it to “Fuck Microsoft” gave the same issue. Only when I made up a fake name did it accept it.

Not sure if this is a bug or if it blocks swear words. If anyone knows why it does this please leave a comment.

My guess is that they dont want anybody to use the word ‘Microsoft’ in their account name to impersonate the company.

I guess it’s a polite way to block swear words without saying it’s blocked. Kinda confirmed by their acceptance of the last name Microsoft.

But we’ll never have the internal story.

i guess they have a swear word filter that replaces FUCK with F***, so it now has special characters…

I find Microsoft more offensive then “fuck”. I say fuck on a daily basis and no one blinks, but try to casually mention copilot vibe coding …

Why not just say that sware words are blocked?

What about people who have swear words their their name like Dick, are they just supposed to change their legal name to get a microsoft account?

Dont most account sign up systems check if the username is valid and only then does it check the password.

I have some friends with the last name Raper. The oldest brother was able to make an account on Hotmail that was firstnamelastname@hotmail. A few years later I was with the middle brother when he tried to setup the same for himself but was told it had disallowed words. Although he used his middle initial C in the attempt which put “crap” in the username, I don’t think that was the disallowed word.

I’d suggest that it’s better to use actual fake identities for privacy anyway, rather than some juvenile attempt to get back at them. Why paint a target on yourself like that?
