The sidebar has been updated with some new rules changes. Mostly the same rules you’ve all seen before, but it’s a little more codified and (hopefully!) a little clearer!
The BIG one to be aware of is the whole lemmy.world content policy has been replaced with a new “Terms of Service”. You can read it here, and I encourage everyone to do so. This is above and beyond World News and applies to all of lemmy.world
The World News rules, copy pasted from the sidebar, are as follows. They may change over time, the mod team discussed it at length, but we want to be 100% clear and transparent in modding and we hope this helps!
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days, expanded from 14 days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
Edit Since we’ve had repeats of this today, video links aren’t allowed. Articles only.
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think “Is this fair use?”, it probably isn’t. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed.
Rule 3: Posts based on misinformation or outright propaganda will be removed.
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, ableist, will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (perjorative, perjorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (perjorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members.
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

TBH, I’m tempted… but there are enough angles on, say, the Gaza conflict that a Megapost doesn’t really cover it.
The hospital story, the church story, that can be handled by just keeping the first post and removing duplicates.
Are liveblogs allowed? On the one hand, they are effectively microblogging and closer to social media than actual news articles. On the other, they typically come from semi-respected sources. But they lack important details and context, and are sometimes retracted as more credible sources show up.
As long as it’s a verifiable source and is for some live event like a House Vote or a debate or an election, yeah, that’s fine, just remember if there’s a Megapost up to keep it in the Megapost.
House vote? Like Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff?
I was referring to the liveblog sections of BBC, CNN, NBC, Al Jazeera, and other media sources. Examples:
Yeah, all those are fine. But like I say, if it’s for an event covered in a Megapost, keep it in the Megapost.
Are press releases allowed? They are inherently biased and are great primary resources, but I don’t think they are a great starting point for discussion.
We will talk this over with the rest of the mods and make a decision.
Does this mean op/eds should not be posted?
I completely agree if so, just want to know before I report any threads.
I’m OK with op eds as long as it’s from a reliable source, published in an actual news source like the NYT, WaPo, WSJ… not some random WordPress blog. :)
Edit For some reason I had my “Politics” hat on when I wrote that instead of my “World News” hat.
To be clear, editorials are fine in Politics, not World News.
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda will be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating will be removed.
NYT, WaPo, and others sometimes publish absolutely horribly inaccurate biased opinion articles. I don’t think there’s much meaningful discussion to be had around opinion articles in the first place, but if you do want to make this change then please update the sidebar to reflect the rule change.

Sometimes, but not regularly, they are all Newspapers of Record and will not be removed.

So taking some license from your source, I think this should be added to Rule 1:
- Opinion articles may be allowed if they are published from a media source that are rigorous, showing attention to detail and having accountability in their editorial processes.
Regardless of the final wording, the rules posted here are materially different from the sidebar - in particular Rule 3.
