Anecdotally: I’ve lived in the sort of place he’s describing and the internet was an overpriced monopoly. Farmers and people in larger cities both paid much better prices for better service. But the ISP had some deal where they had exclusive rights to run equipment on the power poles (or other companies needed their technicians present first or some bullshit which they would delay to the point of impracticality).

At $115 he probably didn’t get the lowest speed and could have done like $60 for internet and $40 for phone but yeah, I can believe it.

Thats a 3rd gen corvette. The ones made in the early 70’s were famously slow. That’s the “malaise era” when the fuel crisis and emissions regulations meant that new cars coming out were less powerful than older ones. Technology hadn’t caught up, especially for American cars which had large engines with older block designs.

So did any communism NOT collapse yet? Late stage communism seems to have killed Russia and all the third world countries that tried it, just look at Somalia. China functionally dropped communism (idk if they’re better off for it but they did). Meanwhile free market countries are still around. Eh, its true that no-one does sales like Valve. Even while the sales aren’t as good as they used to be, Steam pretty much forced the market to move on what a “good” discount was. Calling it a nice move to save you money is a joke but they really did bring prices down in the whole market.

Yeah, forums exist but they have a real hard time growing their userbase these days. It’s just more deliberate to visit a particular forum’s website, then usually click on a subforum, then look at a thread, and then see its contents. Then you might be on page 37 of a thread and people are all discussing that post from page 33. It’s slow compared to something like Reddit/Lemmy or Xitter style sites that put the content right in your face without having to look around.

I’m prone to falling for this myself even as I lament forums growing quiet. But I guess the best thing to do is link directly to forum threads from other social media and hope enough users trickle in.

What I REALLY hate is Discord servers replacing forums for things like video game FAQs and it’s really hard to find the latest announcement, bug workaround, or whatever without butting into the conversation and asking (you’re the 48th person to ask today and people are a little annoyed).
