I think “pessimistic” is the word you were looking for. To be narcissistic, they would have to be thinking that they would personally be ending the world.

Personally, I think search engines are one of the only use cases I can think of where AI could be genuinely useful one day. Especially if it is capable of cutting through the SEO and generative AI slop that currently ruins most search results.

Looking at the rest of the news this morning, I really don’t think “bending the knee” describe what world leaders are doing at all. For example, Canada just re-started relations with China and is increasingly looking like they might buy a fleet of Gripens instead of F-35s, and the EU signed a free trade agreement with MERCOSUR. Everyone is drifting away from the US. They are just doing so quietly, after all, the US is still the world’s biggest economic and military force.

I honestly don’t think it can. They would have to elect probably three sensible presidents in a row, and that’s really not in the cards.

I work in the auto industry and have watched the process unfold. Ford alone fucked over dozens of companies when they abandoned the EV production at Oakville. That wasn’t just plans that changed; the equipment to supply that line was already installed. Now there’s plants all over the GTA that are half empty with half their workforce layed off.

Honestly, I’d be much more worried about allowing Chinese EVs into the Canadian market if the North American manufacturers hadn’t already abandoned the EV market altogether. As it stands, if the big three wanted to get serious about building affordable EVs today, it would take two years just to get back to where they were before Trump’s second term started.

It’s still the same party in charge that decided to use tanks to run over student protesters. China only seems more stable right now because protesters would have all been rounded up into the re-education camps a long time ago.

“Reasonable” is not the word I’d use. “Predictable” is more apt in my opinion.
