It Follows had a great concept but kinda missed the execution by trying to be traditionally scary. The first appearances of the monster where it still looked like a human were the best because it could be anywhere at any moment. Then it started showing up as a zombie and lost that. It’s still a good movie but it could have been so much better.

The Enigma of Amigara Fault aka the holes comic is pretty high up there.

“Cars may work fine in the Netherlands but they can’t possibly work here. Here we have fog”

Nope, I think most banks are actually closing some branches in favor of online service.
We build betting shops and fast food places.

That second person is a pain. Costa Rica has one of the more reasonable grammars. And then you get places like Chile and Uruguay where it seems any combination of voseo, tuteo and that special -ai thing is valid even in the same sentence.

I’m technically not studying Spanish now so this is not strictly language learning. Recently I found the Chilean show El Reemplazante which some kind person has uploaded on YouTube. It almost feels like a different language. It took a season to be able to understand “most” of what is being said but I think I’m slowly getting there. It’s fun to try writing down some harder dialogs. If you’ve never heard casual Chilean Spanish here’s a nice sample https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfD1lxwvDQc&t=1766s (at 29:26)

This is the only book that’s ever given me a nightmare. And you should 100% read it.

The doors in my house didn’t close when I was a kid either (there was stuff in front of them). It didn’t feel weird at the time but I still have trouble seeing any space as mine. But this feels very light in comparison because it’s not hidden that your parents can hear you.

I feel this can be even worse when it’s not obvious the parents are going through their stuff. Kids will know they’re being watched but not necessarily how. This can really fuck with your head.

So the purpose of this web portal is to show parents a transcript of their child’s conversations with their toys. Even if you ignore all security implications of storing this data, isn’t this a break of trust by itself? Don’t kids deserve a minimum of privacy?

In case you’re serious. The comment I was replying to suggested that telecom companies could disable texting by detecting who is driving using the phone’s movement data. But that movement data will be the same for the driver and the passengers, so they only show that you are in a vehicle, not necessarily driving. So using this would also block texting for passengers which doesn’t make any sense.

Well exactly, but they’d have the same movement as the driver
Pretty sure Sebastián would be happy to answer this question to non-journalists too

What if you’re a passenger? But also how could they enforce it if you’re just using data through a chat app? If they disable data, that means they also disable maps and navigation.

Meet has been the only video/call app I’ve never had any issues with. If it wasn’t owned by Google it’d be great.

Out of curiosity are you on wayland? At some point teams stopped letting me share my screen (there wasn’t even a button) and it was around the time I changed to wayland so that was probably why. I haven’t tried it since then so maybe they fixed it but it was pretty weird.

Funny thing, I initially wrote “is” but changed it because it felt wrong. Somehow replying to a thread about English fluency makes you second guess everything :D

Pretty fluent I guess. Most of the media I consume are in English and I never have issues understanding things (at least for US and UK content). I also think in English about half of the time. The main problem is my accent, which is terrible and trips me up a lot when trying to speak. This is one of the parts you don’t train too much when most of your communication in English happens with other non-native speakers.
And now every driver around them is distracted trying to figure out why their navigation/music/call stopped working. I don’t think this would have the intended effect.
