  • Are you the lemmy cops? Is it your responsibility to chase any link to someone’s website across every instance and make sure people know they are a bit of a jackass?

If you think GoL should be a banned source, take it up with the various moderators. If you think only primary sources should be allowed (which I actually agree with), that is also a discussion to be had.

But rushing in to berate people for linking to one of the most popular news aggregators for a story that people would be interested in because you don’t like the guy who owns that site? All you are doing is discouraging people from making posts in the future.

Which is the problem with dragging community/subreddit drama everywhere you go. It just makes the site a much more hostile place for everyone. And we really aren’t big enough to be doing that.

  • There are many shades of tankies.

The hardcore Hasan fans (and, probably Hasan himself) are generally good folk with strong leftist ideals who drink a bit too much of the kool-aid and have a tendency to be useful idiots who spew blatant pro-russian propaganda (remember the first few days of the war in Ukraine? I sure do). But when someone they know/“know” cares about them is saying something? They listen.

Hexbear and lemmygrad are full of the kind of tankies who manipulate THOSE tankies. The ones who are gleeful to spew pro-russian propaganda because it proves they are REALLY leftist… or because they are literally paid to do so.

  • I am an AAPI. I already know no candidate gives a shit about me. Hell, it says something when frigging Yang seemed palatable for like… five minutes. And with the way geopolitics is shaking up? If you thought the anti-asian hate was bad during the lockdown parts of COVID, just wait until we are in a cold war gone lukewarm against china like we are with russia.

And that is why a lot of AAPI folk kind of go right wing. They, like their parents, decide it is easier to try to ingratiate themselves wit hteh white supremacists than to show solidarity. But the rest of us? We rapidly learn that there IS no solidarity with us because we are “model minorities” and get told to shut the fuck up when more important minorities are being discriminated against.

But also? That isn’t the only issue. There are AAPI women and AAPI lgbtq+ folk and so forth. And thus, you actually look at the issues and vote in your interests even if neither party really gives a shit. Because you have more than one issue (and, even that, one party is still a lot less shitty)

So if “Well… neither is great but one is a whole lot worse in these very concrete ways” isn’t working?

You get a celebrity influencer to say it. Like Sanders.

  • Generally speaking, people AREN’T saying “vote with us or else you’re a piece of shit” to anyone who is (good faith) complaining about Biden’s horrendous record on genocide and Kamala being unlikely to be much better. We almost always point out "Yeah… it sucks. But do you think trump will be any better? and get responses along the lines of “WELL I WON’T VOTE FOR GENOCIDE!! THAT IS MY LINE!!!”

It has nothing to do with the way the message was said and pretending otherwise is an active insult to everyone who gives a shit.

The only reason this MIGHT make a dent is because it is Bernie Sanders. The guy who opened a lot of people’s minds to the reality that there is something better than late stage capitalism and beltway liberals.

  • I am just going to say this one more time because I am quite certain you aren’t reading anything:

    Explanation, not excuse.

What you listed is an explanation. That explains WHY people are assholes. That does not excuse them being an asshole. And it is incredibly important to understand that.

Because excusing the pure evil of what a “side of the aisle” is doing in favor of “coming together”? That is how we got into this fucking mess. We refused to actually codify abortion rights because we didn’t want to anger people and, as a result, roughly half the country lost basic human rights while they were eating lunch. We try to compromise on people’s fundamental right to exist which leads to the stupidity of “I guess I’ll only breathe every other day?”

Understand where people came from. Do not excuse the fucking evil they did. Because if the only way they will oppose outright fucking evil is if you give them a handy? Fuck 'em. They are monsters who will never actually concede and just want to force you to concede.

    Because

Low taxes for me, high for thee. Government spending on me, none for thee. Deregulation for me, suffocating anti-competitive requirements for thee

sounds like an evil mother fucker to me. And you yourself acknowledge

You can convince a narcissist that you are on their side, and that helping you helps them. This will only last as long as you are on their side.

Any compromise with them is just enabling them. Explain to them why they are wrong. Point out what the magats are doing to them. But fuck any concessions. We did that for decades and just lose and lose and lose.

  • Because the average person isn’t watching the news. They aren’t buying newspapers.

And of the two ends of the spectrum? Leftists are very much in the 90s Talk Radio stage of things where “Wow, this person has some great ideas and I am glad I can hear such a left leaning viewpoint. OOH!! This person is best friends with putin and is going to explain to me why the US are really the villains in every war on earth” just with Twitch instead of AM radio.

So if a “mainstream news media” outlet wants to survive? They have to at least avoid alienating those right wing fascists.

  • I was grandfathered in to the old funimation (?) subscription rates.

Then I checked on a whim and crunchyroll had silently bumped me up to their insane monthly rates like five months prior.

The good news was that it helped me to math out that it was almost always cheaper to just buy the blu rays for a season or two rather than do any of the online subscriptions for anime. And now I have a ridiculous plex server.

    1. I don’t think you know what the word “gaslight(ing)” means
    2. If people actually cared about the Palestinians they would advocate for harm reduction and any hope for them rather than all but guaranteeing their eradication under trump. It is a very slim chance but there is hope that the Kamala administration will at least give israel fewer bombs or demand they be used for things that benefit US interests (like attacking iran) rather than cheering on the genocide.

But, to elaborate, the Palestinians have a long history of mostly beiing a political tool. In the past, when there were chances to evacuate them as refugees, the majority of neighboring countries actively refused (ironically citing fears of Hamas led insurrections). But when it is a way to bleed resources out of israel they suddenly are all humanitarians.

And considering how many prominent mouthpieces are, at best, useful idiots for the tankies? It is hard to believe that suddenly, after everyone discovered Palestine existed on October 8th, that is truly the greatest issue facing the planet (especially when other active genocides are still ignored).
