For a couple of years now I have been working at a shop in a very, very impoverished and rough part of my city that is predominately occupied by low income minorities. I hope this doesn’t come off condescending but it took me a while to realize that a not insignificant number of our customers struggled to read the menu and price, info ect about products we had. I feel bad even for being a bit frustrated in the past by this, and we do our best to accommodate everyone and make them feel welcomed now I like to think anyway. But this is certainly a widespread issue that is rarely discussed or understood especially by those who reside only in wealthier areas or what not.

  • You’re 100% right, its ridiculous and you have articulated what I was thinking far better than I could. I work for a second job at a place that sells these disposable vapes and like I’m guilty of indulging too ofc but it blows my mind how many of these we sell. And it all ends up in the trash. Some people are buying one every other day, they should probably be banned honestly. Its an opulent level of waste

  • Oh yea I’m well familiar, I used to use one like that but have in the past year tried to eliminate my nicotine habit so stopped for a good while but sadly have gotten into lately picking up some of these disposables, usually just when I’m going out for the weekend or whatever.

But I do see a lot of people who buy only the disposable vapes very often, and even in general their existence upsets me lol

  • We have a similar app where I live, though I’ve never actually tried it I should.

Extremely tangentially related but I have been in a bad habit lately of buying disposable nicotine vaporizers and every time I get one I feel great shame. The amount of waste they generate is absurd, with cardboard and plastic packaging as well as tossing out a whole ass battery and such. This shit is not sustainable.

There is a reason the west produces magnitudes more garbage than the rest of the world, I always threw out so much less trash and especially food when I was in China and had easy access to a fresh wet market.

  • The absolute best thing about this board is the insight from intelligent and devoted comrades around the world. I greatly appreciate your perspective on this as a westerner, and I am eager to learn more about Brazilian politics. The fog of war in media here makes it difficult to understand the reality on the ground and often times very complex political situations in very diverse countries like Brazil are approached in reductionist ways due to this, and I of course include myself in this.

I’m sure many here would love to know more about your experiences and thoughts on the political landscape of the country, so thank you for your great contribution !

  • Drugs are the number one thing that I struggle to approach from a balanced Marxist perspective by far. The way that drugs are pervasive in western society, especially for those of us who grew up in very working class urban areas in North America, makes them a difficult topic for me. I have been exposed to drugs my entire life, bought, sold, consumed them, ect. I have been thinking for a while now that we need a good struggle session on the grad about drugs, usage, access, legalization and what not. I very much want to hear the perspective of comrades that come from places or backgrounds where they are not so ubiquitous.

Specifically in terms of weed, I struggle with it a lot. On one hand, I have been addicted to smoking weed for the best part of the past decade on a near daily basis, and it has definitely impacted my life in negative ways. On the other hand, it also saved me from alcohol and amphetamine abuse basically. I often think about the Frank Ocean album Blonde, where there is an interlude that talks about how marijuana makes you “lazy stupid and unconcerned” or something along those lines. That is absolutely the truth I think. I could have accomplished a lot more in my 20s were it not for the comfort of going home to smoke weed, I think anyway. I’m very sympathetic to arguments both for and against its place in society.

Putting people in prison or ruining their lives over it is obviously terrible, especially in regards to the way it has been used in the US to target the black population. That being said, I don’t think that it being a thing that most every young person gets into is good either. There must be some balance to be found, but right now I am not sure what it is. And this is just weed, that’s not even talking about harder drugs which I think are a similar but different topic.

Very interested to hear other comrade’s thoughts on this anyway, thank you for the post.
