We need a viable alternative to Android. Google has clearly shown that it’s a terrible steward for anything under its wing. Even if they somehow backtrack, they will continue pushing anti consumer practices in the long term. It’s been a couple of years now that I can’t install an apk that is unavailable in my country, because they’re somehow verifying my country with Google Play services. I’ve managed to ditch Chrome this year after 16 years and I’m not looking back, I wish I had done this earlier. If only there was an open Android alternative I could jump to.

Great news, very relieved to hear. Now if we could get rid of the powers that actively push the EU towards such dark considerations.

Likewise. It’s so good reading these headlines and not care anymore, because I can play my games on Linux.

Europe@feddit.org•EU Survey about mass surveilance until 20th SeptemberEnglish
21·2 months agoIt’s confusing indeed, and the questions are phrased in such a way as to lead you on. Regardless, it’s a tool to make our voices heard loud and clear. There’s a feedback section in the end where one can voice their discontent in how badly the questionnaire is put together.

16·2 months agoI don’t understand why the EU has started methodically undoing all the progress they’ve made towards championing their citizens’ rights. At some point and for a long time, it felt like the EU was one of the last sane governing bodies in the world. Now there’s chat control attempts, attempts to pass mass surveillance regulations and giving in to completely insane US demands? Where are we heading? What’s next?

Technology@lemmy.world•Google will block sideloading of unverified Android apps starting next yearEnglish
13·3 months agoSame outcome as with their search engine, same thing with Chrome, Youtube and many other Google products. They built up their user base with a solid product (or bought it), and then started shitting all over their users by making horrible decisions and inserting all sorts of dark patterns in the name of “security” or whatever else pretense. I’m still hoping another entity steps up and fills the vacuum that Android leaves behind.

8·4 months agoComing from a Steam Deck, I was really happy when I learned about Bazzite. I tried installing it and stuck with it for a few months now and I’m excited to have gotten rid of Windows. It’s fast and works well out of the box. Plus I have the SteamOS experience without fuss.
Bonus points for you, it’s Fedora based and easy to install on top if Fedora.
Notably I had tried Ubuntu before this and had issues with VRR and a couple of other things. Bazzite is built for this, and it works well.

Technology@lemmy.world•Google Keeps Making Smartphones WorseEnglish
157·4 months agoUnfortunately the Android experience is getting more and more bloated and users’ freedom to tinker with their phones or sideload apps is getting more and more difficult. The Play Store is riddled with more ads than useful content. Just try searching for something, and oftentimes more than half of your screen is ads.
I’ve been with Android since the start and I hate what Google is reducing it to. It pains me that the only viable alternative is Apple and I feel trapped.

Linux@programming.dev•End of 10 - Windows ten is ending. Microsoft wants you to buy a new computer. But what if you could make your current one fast and secure again?
3·7 months agoSame experience as Steam Deck. It boots to a sort of Big Picture mode, and in the Power Menu you have an option to “switch to desktop”. They are separate modes and I believe you get logget out from either in order to switch to the other. It’s fast though.
Note that there are a couple of iso download options depending on what experience you want with Bazzite, I chose the one that most closely resembles the Deck’s.
Before this I had tried Ubuntu and I had lots of issues out of the box, with VRR, crackling sound and other stuff. Bazzite worked out of the box, and required nrarly zero setup. There are minor issues, but nothing even close to a dealbreaker - for instance the default audio device on boot was always the PS5 controller’s speaker, so I disabled it (I’m sure there are better solutions), or Steam always shows there’s an update (even though you might be on the latest version).

29·7 months agoI only used windows on my desktop for gaming. Having a Steam Deck, I was really eagerly waiting for an official SteamOS distro for my desktop. And then I tried Bazzite. I have been playing games on Bazzite for a couple of months now and I’m super happy. So glad to get rid of Windows’ constant nagging and Microsoft’s worsening practices. Every time I booted my desktop there was a new shitty surprise either to make my local login profile into a cloud one, forcefully update to win11 or some other unwanted bad UX. Bye bye Microsoft, at long last!
