Guillermo Söhnleinm told Insider he has wanted to make humanity a multi-planet species since he was 11 years old, and that OceanGate was part of that ambition.

Venus has some things going for it, like a relatively earth-like gravity of 8,87 m/s² (about 90% of earths) , an atmosphere blocking radiation and being relatively close to earth . The proposed colony would float in a part of the atmosphere that is less hot and dense than the surface. It still wouldn’t be very useful, you can’t utilise the resources on the surface. And it would be obviously very risky.

I wouldn’t really consider it “close to Earth” just because its orbit is close to Earth’s orbit. The rocket accessibility and communication lag between Earth and Venus would vary significantly throughout the year, so it’s not as constant as something like the moon.

True, the moon is better in terms of delta v requirement, transfer windows and communication lag, but of the other planets only mercury has a lower average and less variable communications lag and its close orbit makes for a relatively small delta v requirement for an interplanetary transfer.
