FYI: The quote is not really from House of Cards. It’s often attributed to Oscar Wilde (which is who I thought originally said it), but it turns out that’s apocryphal and there’s no basis to it. The quote appeared in an interview with author Michael Cunningham in 1995, who only said he “thought” it was Oscar Wilde. So it may predate that, but actual authorship is unknown. As far as the sentiment itself… I think it’s clever, and I do think there’s some amount of truth to it, but I don’t think it holds true 100% of the time. I think it’s a reasonable default position, but every so often humans have unexpected intentions.
