Help a fam out.
Obviously more Yes would do generally, but as an absolute Yes freak I gotta recommend some Jon Anderson. His best album is Olias of Sunhillow, but I’d also give a nod to Invention of Knowledge by Anderson/Stolt. Oh yeah, and also Can’t Look Away by Trevor Rabin goes hard.
Bonus: Fish Out of Water by Chris Squire is solid too.
Putting a star on this as well.
Prog is fuckin rad as long as it’s not Genesis, when I need pretentious whiteboy music I always throw on Yes and vibe ❤
I hate Genesis.
It’s always on the radio, or was, where I was it.
This was during the Glee TV show and I hated the over-playing of that music on the radio.
But eh, at this point, I’m over it (and I’m never listening to “Don’t stop believing” again).
That’s a Journey song :> The overplayed Genesis I find is usually “That’s All” from the 1980 s/t or Invisible Touch’s title track, usually the Phil Collins era stuff. People will go hard for The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway or Foxtrot, but Peter Gabriel’s voice I never came round to.
Also insert your American Psycho bit right here lmao
LMAO
Heart of the Sunrise, by Yes
noice
Maybe a bit out there, but Plains of the Purple Buffalo by *shels is a pretty adventurous listen.
Oooo, I like adventurous!
I cant find it on youtube but listen to all of Rush’s farewell to kings and hemispheres albums back to back
when dipping your toes into prog rock listen to full albums they’re often connected thematically and musically.
Oh good idea

Genesis - Can-Utility and the Coastliners
It’s hard to pick specific songs, but IMO these two + Yes are the prog bands. Album-wise, I recommend fully listening to
- Fragile and Close to the Edge by Yes;
- Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound by Genesis
- In the Court of the Crimson King and Larks’ Tongues in Aspic by King Crimson

I don’t know if you’re specifically looking for something older, but have you ever listened to the Mars Volta? They are a lot newer than yes, but they have a lot of the same energy as that song. The whole album Deloused in the Comatorium is fantastic, and it has all the same frenetic energy, with jazzy or more melodic parts sprinkled throughout. They also have a varied and robust discography. I’d definitely give them a listen if you haven’t.

Obviously not all songs, but Rise Against have some tracks that are “progressive”, but more so on the critical spectrum. I’d recommend The Numbers specifically. The video even starts off with a quote from Fanon!
Edit: Was told just now I misunderstood prog rock, so sorry for the switch in genre!

- Rush - 2112
- Caravan - Nine Feet Underground (Medley)
- Camel - Never Let Go (Especially This Live Verison)
- Gentle Giant - The Advent of Panurge
- Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick (The whole album is two parts of an epic, both parts around 20 minutes each.)
To dig deeper, check out these bands’ full albums too. Prog rock is insanely epic.
Bonus recommendation: a progressive METAL song, Dream Theater - Metropolis - Part I: The Miracle and the Sleeper
