Yeah the “tankies” classification has always been a bit of a mystery to me too.
What I’ve noticed very prominently though, if you comment on a thread from hexbear or lemmy.ml and seek to discuss any form of nuance which is not absolute support for China, you just get downvoted to oblivion.
I don’t really know who Tankies are or what they’re really about but I do know they just mash the downvote button en-masse if they identify you as not having complete support for their world view.
My own personal dead horse that I like to beat is that you can block those instances to avoid those threads but users from there still influence votes in threads on other servers.
I’m honestly confused about who the tankies are supposed to be at this point. Downvotes for what?
