This is a grossly inadequate format for informing others about the Axis’s atrocities in Ukraine, which—contrary to what the joke implied—involved not only Reich officials but many Ukrainian anticommunists. I don’t know about anybody else here, but I’d have a very difficult time trying to see any humor in the situation after reading about the atrocities.

The films and photographs made by [Axis] soldiers during the pogrom contain very much the same information as the testimonies of the survivors. They show that women were kicked and were beaten in the face and elsewhere with sticks and tools. They were pulled by the hair and tossed from one pogromist to another. Many of the women were stripped naked and exposed to the mob, which made fun of them and mistreated them. Some were chased through the streets. What the films do not show—but which we know from testimonies of survivors—is that women were raped, and pregnant women were hit and kicked in the stomach.

Almost certainly not. It’s referring to the Axis’s capture of Ukraine in 1941.
And who did Ukraine think the Nazis were freeing them from?
