I use a Pixel 6 Pro with Android 14 installed, and I cannot use Proton Mail instead of Gmail for email links. Whenever I click Proton Mail, Gmail is still the top option the next time I open the same email link. I don’t want to reset app preferences, as I have too many notification and app usage settings set for my apps. Is there a way to set Proton Mail as the default? (preferably a universal method so that I can use this on other apps)

Attached below are pictures of the app “Open by default” settings from the Android settings app for both Gmail and Proton Mail.

I know on my Samsung at the top of the apps list in settings there’s a “choose default apps” option, but I’m unsure if that’s one of their changes or not. I’m pretty sure the functionality is in base Android.

Do you mean mailto links? Mail is not a type of app but a type of link. Depending on where you’re opening the link from, sometimes you can long press to recall the open with menu and choose always open with proton. If that doesn’t work check the app setting on the default apps section, there’s a “link opening” sub menu. There you can see which apps open which internet links. Sometimes a link is not a generic mail to but a specific gmail link that is configured to automatically open with the app. Maybe try disabling gmail from opening links altogether or try to find the offending link on the messy link list. There’s a lot of dead google services that are now redirected to gmail.

I highly recommend switching to GrapheneOS, it is very easy to install, even from another phone completely GUI.

apart from that, disable all google crap you dont need including gmail, and it will not show anymore and block that place.

You could maybe also disable “open links” in gmail app settings (long press on icon, app info) but I think this doesnt work

I’m very attracted by grapheneOS, but got absolutely addicted to paying with my phone in the short time I’ve had an NFC chip on one.

You can use your Gmail accounts on different clients. Both Fairemail and K-9 Mail support it.

did you try what other people said, namely going to Gmail app info (depends on your lancher/settings layout) > Set as default > Open supported links (toggle to disable)?
