You can see what videos are available on their website without logging in, so you can get an idea of the content from the creators and titles. You can watch most of the same videos with ads by looking up the creators on YouTube to see if you like them before committing to a Nebula subscription. If you do opt to get Nebula and you also like documentaries, I recommend getting it through the CuriosityStream bundle which is about the same price annually, but gives access to more content.
yes/no. 90% of content is also on youtube for free (but with youtube ads). Using the website with the bonus content is paid.
Netflix is paid only even though some of their content is available elsewhere for free.
