I’ve seen occasional comments from folks here where the avatar appears broken, and when going directly here, I found some community icons are likewise…
Checked another browser to make sure and they’re more obviously broken viewed through it, so uh…What’s up? Did Lemmy change accepted image formats at some point that broke a bunch of’em here?
My layperson’s understanding: something was fucky with the server database. It was frequently lagging out and taking down the whole instance.
@seahorse put a tremendous amount of effort and time into trying different potential fixes. We stan a true king, long may he reign.
When a fix finally worked, it had the side effect of fucking up some of the previously uploaded images. All things considered a price worth paying. The instance was almost unusable for me before.
I’m a mod of /c/kansascity and ours is one that is broken. I’m not sure if this is the case for others with broken icons, but I’m actually unable to update the icon or even the sidebar text at all. Clicking save results in an indefinitely-spinning loading icon. I’ve let it sit for a long time and it never does anything. I wanted to give it a few days before bothering @seahorse@midwest.social about it in case it was my problem, but it seems like it’s still doing it.
