I think the main difference between a drone operator from a base would have some sort of lag time, but having 3 brains working against 1 opponent would make up for the difference.
Shoot, why even have the pilot there. Just 3 drones vs 1 opponent would be even better.
Why do that when someone remotely can independently fly the other two and be even more useful?
We went through all this trouble to develop the F-15. It would be a crime against humanity to leave it on the ground.

With the plane near the drones the connection can be purely by line of sight communication which practically can’t be disrupted.
If we imagine an all out war against a near peer opponent remote control from a drone base is a lot harder to do.
