This represented a significant increase compared to the 329 thousand recorded in 2021. Similar to previous years, the number of deaths exceeded the number of births in 2022. The disparity between deaths and births further widened to 327 thousand, compared to 228 thousand in 2021. The regions that saw the largest population increases were North Rhine-Westphalia (up 214.5 thousand), Bayern (up 192.4 thousand), and Baden-Württemberg (up 155.6 thousand).
