I’ve only recently found Schitts Creek and have fallen in love with it. I really like the relationship between Patrick and David and think it might be my favourite representation of a gay couple on TV ever.
Who are your favourite couples on television and film?
Bill and Frank in The Last of Us TV show. I think that’s the first time I ever felt truly connected to a gay couple that weren’t just there for comedic effect.
They were absolutely the best. I was watching that episode with my dad the other week and he said something along the lines of how cute a couple they were.
It was a really lovely moment for me seeing such sweet representation and also hearing my dad say something positive. Growing up he’d switch the channel or make vomit noises if he saw a gay couple on TV so he’s really progressed. Made sure to tell him I appreciate that he’s done that and had a nice bonding moment!
Patrick and David.
Patrick and SpongeBob
Ernie and Bert
Bit tongue in cheek but Robin Williams and Nathan Lane are absolutely hysterical in The Birdcage, everyone should see that movie
You’re right it’s absolutely bonkers but so much fun. I wonder how well it’s aged, not seen it in years!
It has aged perfectly. It’s one of those movies I can watch monthly.
Here’s a fun fact - when they were doing the interview circuit to promote the movie, Nathan Lane was extremely nervous because he didn’t want to be outed. It wasn’t a great time to be gay in Hollywood (or anywhere else). They were doing an interview with (iirc) Oprah, and Nathan had spoken to Robin Williams about his concern before they went out of the green room.
So she of course asks Nathan whether he’s worried that people would think that he’s gay because of his performance. Robin Williams immediately jumped in and just camped it up, and completely deflected the question. Oprah and the audience all just took it as Robin being Robin, but Nathan knew that it was a deliberate effort to prevent his embarrassment, and he still relates the story.
Just Robin Williams doing Robin Williams things. Such a good guy.
I’ll add this to my list and give it a watch again soon, not been watching enough comedy these days.
The French version was holds up too!
David and Kieth, Six Feet Under
This one hit me really hard because I didn’t come out till a few years ago. Hiding made me ruin a relationship that could have been really good for me back in 2015. Which of course led to more shame and guilt and hiding.
That show was so beautifully written and really showed the dynamic of that kind of relationship and how unfair it is to the out partner.
I haven’t thought about those guys in years! I didn’t complete 6 feet under, maybe it’s time for a re watch 🤔
Jack and Tom, who gave us our first gay kiss on national TV in Ireland: https://yewtu.be/watch?v=6fAE9HPA588
When was that aired? It looks nineties or maybe eighties?
Also I feel bad for not realising this but I didn’t know Gaelic was spoken enough to have television shows made with it. Assuming they were speaking Gaelic and I’ve not just made a right fool of myself! I thought it was something people were trying to keep alive more than using as their main language.
It’s very early nineties if I remember right. The Irish language, which is called Gaeilge here, is a Gaelic language.
You’ haven’t said anything foolish at all. In fact, you’re right that people are trying to keep it alive. It’s just that many people speak it every day too as their primary language. Our TV station is at https://tg4.ie if you’re curious about what a modern broadcast looks like.
Thanks for the information! I’ll check it out 😊
The gay dudes from Mission Hill.
“Well then why don’t you leave and find someone who doesn’t have a knife stuck in their head if it bothers you so much?!”
eeee they love and care for each other sooo much!
I’ve never heard of Mission Hill. What’s it about? I’m assuming it’s not all stabbing in the head.
It was a short-lived adult animation that was on Adult Swim in the early to mid 2000’s. It was really ahead of it’s time, and kinda sad why it isn’t around anymore.
It’s about a cartoonist who ends up having his younger brother live with him while he goes to college. It’s not really serialized, it’s episodic so there’s no real overarching plot aside from character development. But it’s funny as hell.
The gay couple are two older men from the 40’s. One is a big bald dude who owns a diner, and the other is a smaller, rather timid but kind dude. The knife thing was from the one episode that focused entirely on the couple. The bald dude had a knife in head head from some accident and refused to seek medical attention while the other guy was trying to get him to take care of himself.
I also love Patrick and David from Schitt’s Creek. One of the best romances, let alone gay romances, I’ve seen in television.
Yeah there’s something so wholesome even though there are quite a few arguments between them. Oh and when Patrick sings Simply the Best it’s just beautiful.
Since David and Patrick are taken and someone else already mentioned The Birdcage, I’m going to go with Isaac Higgentoot and Nigel from Ghosts.
The bros from the movie free fall ❤
I’ve never heard of this movie! What’s it about? Is it recent?
No, from 2008 or so. Its about two police men, there’s some frontal nudity. Definitely recommended!
Oh it’s got one of the hot guys from Sense 8 in it! I’ll defintely give it a watch, thanks for the recommendation
Lmao. That was exactly my reaction towards sense 8. I watched free fall first and then I was like ok sensei 8 has that hot guy from the movie. No regrets, sensei 8 is an amazing show.
It is such a good show and thinking back a lot of hot people in it. Just a hot cast overall really.
They are all really hot. The orgy scene tho! 🥵 I wonder how much of that scene was acting and how much was real 🤔😂
Have you seen this? I think he cast were quite close…
