US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield said at the Council of Foreign Relations in New York on September 12, in response to a journalist's question on recognition of Palestinian statehood.
The US doesn’t get to decide.
The problem is that they kinda do, though… any of the 5 permanent members (US, UK, France, Russia, China) can veto a state seeking membership to the UN. Obviously other countries can still recognize them, but being excluded from the UN precludes lots of services and agreements, and at a minimum just makes everything harder
Palestine was authorized in 47. Its neighbours over ran it (stole the land) months later. The vote back then was done differently than the way they do things today.
