I thought lemmy would only cache text from remote instances to avoid replicating images across the lemmyverse. But I’m seeing a lot of images stored in volumes/pictrs/files/

Your instance will locally generate and save thumbnails for external links in posts.
Also user avatars, community icons etc for your instance.
Ah, great thanks. That sounds much smaller in file size than mirroring all embedded content.
