Antisemitic rioters “actively sought out Israeli supporters to attack and assault them” after a soccer match in Amsterdam, authorities in the Netherlands said Friday, with police reporting five people hospitalized and 62 detained after a night of violence

The only stories about this I’ve seen on Lemmy take a very pro-Israel perspective. Have the Israelis started doing to Lemmy what they’ve done to Reddit?

NBC’s coverage, as an alternative, says this immediately after it’s opening statement:

Videos circulating on social media showed violence in the city’s streets, with one video geolocated by NBC News to near Amsterdam’s central station appearing to show people chasing others and physically assaulting them. Separate video geolocated by NBC News showed Maccabi Tel Aviv fans in Amsterdam singing “Death to the Arabs” and “Let the IDF win. We will f*** the Arabs,” as well as tearing down a Palestinian flag.

…which clarifies that the attack was the people of Europe showing that unlike their governments, they do not tolerate genocidal apartheid supporters.

It is actually encouraged to post multiple sources about a story here, especially if they cover different material or represent a different take. If you ever notice that a story is misrepresented or a perspective is underrepresented, please don’t hesitate to post reliable news sources offering another perspective.

Which gives the attackers license to be physically violent against those they disagree with?

      Odd double standard.

Israeli fans were assaulted after a soccer game in Amsterdam by hordes of young people apparently riled up by calls on social media to target Jewish people, Dutch authorities said Friday. Five people were treated for injuries at hospitals and dozens were arrested.

Tensions had been mounting in the Dutch capital over Israel’s campaigns in Gaza and Lebanon, even before Thursday night’s Europa League match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv. Amsterdam authorities banned a planned pro-Palestinian demonstration near the stadium, and video showed a large crowd of Israeli fans chanting anti-Arab slogans en route to the game.

Afterwards, youths on scooters and on foot crisscrossed the city in search of Israeli fans, punching and kicking them and then fleeing quickly to evade police, Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema said.

In Telegram groups, she added, “there is talk of people going on a Jew hunt. That is so shocking and so despicable that I still cannot fathom it.”

Antisemitism. End of discussion. There is no argument that makes this ok. I refuse to engage with anyone furthering the idea that there’s any good reason to physically attack these people. Additionally, it is objectively false that antisemitism is confined to attacking religious people for their religion. That is a lie, and it is insanely dangerous to further that sentiment.

There is talk of a lot of things. Did she provide sources, or is it like Trump’s “people are saying…”?

You’re correct that the US has adopted a terrible definition of antisemitism that conflates the state of Israel and the actions of its genocidal apartheid government with Judaism.

Someone recently shared the Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism with me, which I find to be a much more reasonable definition of antisemitism.

To preface this: Maccabi Hooligan can fick themselves.

But why the fuck do we paint this as “the brave people of europe do not tolerate apartheit” when people were yelling “Cancer jew” and other shit? Why the fuck do people assume that the VERY prevalent antisemitism in Europe suddenly morphed in to nuanced antizionism now that Israel is openly committing a genocide?

No, both sides of this attack can fuck themselves. Fuck Maccabi fans for shouting genocidal shit, smashing cars and attacking arabs and fuck the attackers for ambushing people, headkicking them while they are downed, stabbing them and applying this treatment to anyone wearing maccabi colors.

Which makes no mention of confining it to religion, it supports exactly what I’ve said.

              Who does the definition cover?

The definition applies whether Jewish identity is understood as ethnic, biological, religious, cultural, etc. It also applies in cases where a non-Jewish person or institution is either mistaken for being Jewish (“discrimination by perception”) or targeted on account of a connection to Jews (“discrimination by association”).

Thank you for confirming that, and no, I’ve said nothing about how the us definition is terrible.

The article and mayor are objectively correct in denouncing the antisemitism. Those are the facts, and that’s it. To suggest the article or mayor is lying to further your argument is misinformation.

I will not entertain any further argument from you in this regard. The facts are against you.

Yup, I pasted it in the threads I came across that had poor OP articles. I could have written something unique but… exactly the same message was intended, and I didn’t want to leave any of their biased, popular posts without a response.

Because of course anything that involves Jews as victims must be biased, huh? The result of “anti-Palestinian racism” or some crap like that?

No? What does this have to do with Jews? These were some nationalist hooligans destroying Palestinian flags and harassing Arab cab drivers. Stop trying to conflate Israelis and Jews.

            https://jewishcurrents.org/recent-polls-of-us-jews-reflect-polarized-community

In the last few years, surveys have begun to suggest that a majority of American Jews do not support unconditional aid to Israel. Instead, they are willing to back conditions that military aid not be used to further Israel’s occupation of Palestinians. In fact, a substantial number of American Jews appear willing to go much further in criticizing Israel than community representatives like Daroff: A 2021 poll of Jewish voters by the Jewish Electorate Institute (JEI), for example, made waves when it found that a quarter of respondents agreed that Israel is an apartheid state.

            https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2021/05/21/u-s-jews-have-widely-differing-views-on-israel/

40% say they don’t have a lot in common with Jews in Israel. 42% don’t feel even somewhat attached to the state of Israel. 55% say caring about Israel is not essential to what being Jewish means to them. 66% do not strongly oppose Boycott Divest Sanction.

Stop trying to get people to confuse Jews and Zionists. Huge numbers of Jews have perfectly functioning moral compasses (probably about as many as average Americans) and don’t need to be conflated with Israeli instigators.

Its possible these numbers have shifted recently, as Israel works hard to scare Americans into fleeing to join their settler colonialism project.
