I’m newish to the privacy world, and thus have been… lax in prior years. So my ads are still very targeted. I’ve seen stuff about Incogni, and their whole deal, and wanted to ask y’all if it’s legit/worth it?

About Incogni… To use their service you will have to give them a lot of your personal data which they will use to remove your data from other websites. But if you want to use their service you would need to trust them.

Personally, I don’t trust them and I think it is better to start adopting privacy friendly services right away and stop worrying about the data other companies already have on you. Prevent what you can from now on.

Use Firefox with Ublock Origin extension. Available both on PC/Mac and mobile. You can also enable the extension in incognito mode. This will prevent you from seeing ads in your browser.

Incognito mode creates a temporary profile where as soon as you close the window, all cookies and history are deleted in that profile.

However, websites can still collect information about you thanks to your IP address and browser fingerprint.

If you want more anonymity, I suggest using a VPN. Proton VPN and Nord VPN are two very recommended services.

Edit: I completely misunderstood that you were talking about something else entirely.

I’ll leave my comment up anyway in case anyone might find it useful.

        Any particular reason?

I would prefer Proton over Mullvad for the fact they are located in Switzerland, which means your information is completely private from international governments, agencies or businesses because of the privacy laws there. They are also a non profit organization whose purpose is to provide privacy services to its users. As a non-profit, they have the obligation to do just that and can be held liable if they don’t respect their mission.

mullvad is based on sweden, which basically means the same as what you said about switzerland. mullvad’s goal is also to provide privacy to its users, even if they aren’t a non profit.

mullvad was raided by police once. the police had a search warrant, so mullvad wouldn’t be able to do anything to stop them. the police left with nothing, because mullvad doesn’t keep any information. there was also a post in their website explaining everything.
proton has been asked to give a user’s ip and they gave it, and also removed their “we don’t log your ip” text in their website (stuff aboht proton is all according to what i found searching about it, and i haven’t fact-checked)

mullvad also doesn’t need any email, phone number, name, or anything like that. they just use a login and password, and it can be payed completely anonymously, with things such as monero.

and finally, mullvad doesn’t have a free plan, while proton does. and if there is a free plan, there is something giving them money to run that free plan. since most free plans of anything create money through data collection, there is no way i’m gonna trust that.

Just block all ad/tracking domains and hopefully your ads will go away. I haven’t seen an ad in ages, but when I did (due to temporarily disabling) they were clearly not targeted.

Why deal with targeting at all when you can completely block them?

I can also recommend the NoScript extension.

It breaks a lot of websites – which you then have to unbreak by re-allowing scripts for certain domains, temporarily if desired – but you end up getting a better feeling of how bad the web has become when you come across places that want to load scripts from dozens or more of different domains. Like, you’re intending to tell how many other parties that I’ve visited this website?

You can of course just delete your data over and over again, but AS long as the still collect your data you will have to pay for it all the time. It would be way easier just too block tracking stuff using ublock original, chameleon and noscript
