It pre-dates the lemmy by several years and the community is where the people already are, not the other way around. I had a matrix server and channel and literally no one ever joined the vegan space whereas the discord has dozens of active members. Matrix has a big problem with the type of people it attracts and I shut down the server so none of what they post will ever federate (again…) so I don’t go to jail.
