This is how the feudal system and serfdom as we know it started in some places. During the Fourth Crusade when the crusaders sacked Constantinople the emperor at the time expected his subjects to fight… but fled with his treasury behind him.
Even today with the withdrawal of the US from Afghanistan, the US-backed puppet they put in power spoke about never surrendering, but then fled to the UAE with 150 million dollars with him.
