The first line isn’t from Smith, though the second part is. This is the opening paragraph of Marx’s “Rent of Land” where he’s using quotes from two different authors. Smith and Marx were on the same page about a lot of stuff (including alienation and the labor theory of value!), but the quote is only partly accurate.
