“Two U.S. food companies have received the go-ahead to sell chicken grown from cultivated animal cells in a production facility. It’s the first time meat grown this way will be sold in the U.S.”

alright so i’m partially posting this here to do my part in keeping the vegan kbin/fediverse section alive, but the article also just left me wondering:

how do they “extract” the cells from the animals in the first place? are they put under the same shit conditions they usually are when farmed? is it enough to do one extraction of each species desired and then they can live in peace for the rest of their animal lives?

the npr hosts said “it is meat,” and “it tastes just like chicken / it is chicken!” (which almost sounds like some absurdist satire), does this mean that it has all the same terrible health effects as conventional meat? i really think they’re dodging a huge concern here.
