      DS1’s finest player trap:

Google: how to get out of ash lake without going through great hollow?

Google: how do you get rid of cursed status DS1?

Google: where to get purging stones Ash lake?

Google: can you restore an old save file ds1?

This has got to be rage bait! - 0 good areas? Ash lake, The painted world, anor londo, undead parish, firelink? 0 good bosses? No love for O&S, the bell gargoyles, Sif or Artorias?!

I’d even add the tutorial in for undead asylum and the Asylum demon as good tutorial area+boss combo.

      It’s just a meme :)

Did you like the Undead Asylum as a tutorial area? I feel like it didn’t quite deliver, though which soulslike ever did.

I liked it - sets the scene nicely. Teaches you the mechanics. Is brief. The ‘run away from the boss fight’ tells you that in this game there will be fights you are not ready for immediately, sometimes you have to come back later (which is useful for the noobs trying to get straight to the catacombs/new londo from firelink rather than going towards undead burg). Then the asylum daemon hits hard so teaches you that in ds1 damage avoidance is key to winning but the asylum daemon is slow enough and weak enough not to be too much of a challenge if you pay some attention to the boss not just your own moves.

I found all of the areas very boring, same-ish, and bland. Unless you count the eye hurting lava.

I wouldn’t call any of the bosses bad. Just kind of generic. I don’t really remember any of the bosses all that well other than O&S, but that’s only because they remind me of Bert and Ernie from Sesame street.

I guess the game shows its age. It’s had an immense impact on the genre and gaming as a whole, but I feel like FS has surpassed themselves many times over over the years. It’s to be expected, though, and is something good. Yet, you can still appreciate DS1 for what it is.

I think they were doing the right thing at the right time. It came out deep in the era of follow the glowing path or quest marker. FS basically went back to what older games did for decades, but in a modern game at the time.
