Not really. It helps the flavour a lot and the step with the ice cube can be replaced by putting the base of the pan in a tray of cold water which is what I do. It does add some time and if you really care about saving yourself a bit of time the recipe is functional just melting the butter. However, I believe the added time to brown it is worth it. Just be sure to stir it continuously with a spiral or coil whisk to prevent it from burning. Browned butter is delicious, blackened butter is not.
