I don’t mean that it should be more gory or gritty, as that’s never been really been Project Zero’s style. Nor do I mean that it should also be using Unreal Engine 5 and have Nanite, or Lumen, or path tracing, or whatever bullshit Nvidia is pushing to sell more expensive graphics cards.
I just wish the characters looked more realistic and think that the protagonists looking like semi-anime jpop idols massively detracts from the intended atmosphere. All the game environments are realistic depictions of dilapidated old Japanese houses, manors, shrines, etc and all the ghosts are dressed like regular people in either contemporary or early 19th century Japanese fashion so the protagonists in their themed twin vtuber outfits stick out like a pair of sore thumbs.
I get that this is a remake of a game with pre-existing character designs and pretty waifus have unfortunately become a franchise staple but it wasn’t as distracting back when everything was rendered with PS2 graphics.
It’s also always just bugged me that despite almost every Project Zero/Fatal Frame technically being a period piece set in the 1970s and 1980s, you’d never be able to tell that from how the main characters dress because the generic anime aesthetic overrides everything else
