Everybody seems to have their own qualifiers for what makes a song a good workout song, and this is a question I’ve definitely never been able to really answer for myself.
I tend to find uptempo music more motivating, but I know this isn’t the case for everybody. Even when I go by recommended running/workout playlists, I’ll usually only find one or two songs that seem to do the trick.
I’m not really sure how to explain it because it usually seems to boil down to I’ll know it/feel it when I hear it, but it’s never been something I can predict very well based on genre or BPM.
