Back in multiple years ago, I also had a decent experience with openbsd working out of the box and being very simplified.

Although performance wise it was miles behind a normal linux installation. Event simply browsing is noticeably more sluggish. Which makes sense seeing how openbsd focuses on security mechanisms. That also lead me to stop using it, because for a private use case it made no sense for me to sacrifice that much performance just for security which was not needed.

I would gladly give freebsd another try though, if I ever would be fed up with linux.
