The fourth Vessel of Arihant Class SSBN also denoted as S4*, will be commissioned in navy with the name as INS Arisudan, which means ‘Destroyer of Enemies’ shared by its predecessors INS Arihant, Arighat and Aridhaman.
Lets take this moment to understand how ships and submarines are named in Indian Navy.
The name for the vessel is first introduced by the Indian Navy’s Ship naming committee, it ensures that the upcoming ships are named in accordance with the legacy of past ships such that new ships become like torch-bearers of the new era. This recommendation is then sent to Defense Ministry for clearance with the final clearance given by President of India, only after which the vessel officially gets its name.
The earlier submarines of Arihant Class, like INS Arihant had limited potential as they could carry only K-15 Sagarika Missiles with a range of just 750 Km, but its succesors like INS Arighat and Aridhaman have upgraded capabilities, as the they can carry 8 K-4 Missile with a range of 3,500Km and this will only increase with upcoming upgraded versions of misssiles.
The third vessel of this class INS Aridhaman, also meaning ‘Destroyer of Enemies’ will be commissioned in 2026, and INS Arisudan will be commissioned in 2027.
The Clearance for Production of two SSN under Project 77 with a funding of Rs 40,000 Cr has begun with a further clearance of 4 submarines expected before 2028. Work on S5 Class SSBN has also officially commenced this year.
Lets hope all goes as planned. What do you think about this recent movemnt, let me know.
