Queen to b6 check
forces white to block with the rook (can’t move to row 5 coz of the white-squared bishop and the knight on d3, can’t move to e4 coz of the white-squared bishop)
queen takes rook is mate
@frightful_hobgoblin@lemmy.ml’s solution looks right to me, but is there also at least one other solution that’s also a checkmate in 2?
- Knight takes B5.
- Black is forced to take B5 with either the knight on C3 or the rook on F5. (The white knight on B5 puts the king in check, and there’s no way the king can move out of check, leaving taking the knight as the only option. There are two options for taking the white knight, but neither will save black from…).
- Queen to C4, which is checkmate. (The black king can’t take C4 because that square is protected by the white king. And the black king has no other options for moving out of check.)
Edit: Ah. Never mind. I see my mistake now. The black rook taking B5 puts the white king in check which throws a wrench in the “solution” above. Mine isn’t a solution. Good puzzle!
