TIL Melbourne has the largest tram system in the world, mainly because they didn’t dismantle it in the 1950s like most of the rest of the English-speaking world did.
I also particularly liked this part that goes into the history of streets (and trams). pointing out that streets aren’t actually “for cars” and never have been.

The largest tram system in the world looks a bit sad, my random german city with 1/10 the population of Melbourne has 30 Mio. more riders annually on its trams.
They really need more interconnections and maybe some ring routes.
Yeah unfortunately the trams and trains used to be competitors so there are a lot of places the trams don’t interconnect intentionally.

Most Americans understand the swing-out STOP signs on school buses: American trams with this type of stop could put one of those at the rear edge of the tram (on the curb side).
