Just a small plea to consider hedgehogs when planning your gardens. Hedgehog numbers have halved in the UK since the year 2000 and a few little considerations can be a big benefit.
A few little notes for helping hedgehogs to thrive.
- Access - If you have a fence without any gaps, allow for 1 or more holes near the bottom of the fence around 15cm around to let hedgehogs to enter your garden to find food. If you just have hedges as a boundary, great!
- Water - A bowl of water or a pond. Ensure any ponds have ramps that a hedgehog can walk out of if they fall in.
- Food - Attract beatles and insects with a deadwood pile. Also cat food can be a good supplement for them if left in a feeding station. Do not leave in a hedgehog home. You don’t want to attract predators while they are hibernating.
- Toxins - Avoid slug pellets or chemicals in your gardens. These will make wildlife sick.
- Shelter - Provide a hedgehog home for breeding and hibernating
