… and I couldn’t be more stoked! Empty bike paths, crisp air… I’m ready to throw on the studs.
Snow already? Brrrr!
I braved dense fog this morning to get to work. Not quite ready for frost and snow, but I know it’s coming…
I’m just basically a lizard or some cold blooded creature, because I crave warmth all the time. I’m OK with hot temps, I live in a state where it gets up to 110 in the summer, and that doesn’t faze me at all, I love it. But any hint of coldness, I feel frozen, sluggish, unhappy. Even if the temp only dips below 72. I just do not like being cool or cold at all. Maybe I should go live in the Sonoran desert or something - I could lay on a rock in the sun and be happy!
I get it. Any time it drops below 50f I wear wool long johns basically 24/7.
But if you bundle properly, you’re warm… but it’s also cozy! 🧣
I keep my thermostat at 80 most of the time, if it drops below that I feel really cold. It must some internal temp thing. I’m only happy when it’s really hot, I can’t sleep at all if it’s cool in my bedroom or the slightest bit cold.
One thing I like about winter here is no snow, no rain. Clear skies, negative Celcius temperatures (but not negative Fahrenheit) and a near infinite ability to dump heat
I ride in my summer gear plus gloves, plus a bit of nose protection
I’d trade with you in a heartbeat. My dream is to live in a place someday where they have no idea what the word “snow” even means. I thrive in warm climates, so it kind of sucks I’m stuck in Utah at this time of year. I don’t ski - so that sucks also.
I didn’t mean to diminish anyone’s enthusiasm about winter. I’m envious of it. I wish I could feel that way about winter stuck as I am in one of the coldest parts of the nation for half the year. If I were a cyclist maybe that would make all the difference!
It’s been a little bit over a week of snow here now and I’m loving it. Every morning a small ride to get kid to kindergarten and back at the evening. Good day rides on weekends.
Nothing as fun as hitting the trails with packed snow, little bit afraid when the grip ends
Time to throw on the studs! :)
Nah mate I just ordered a new pair of lighter trail tires haha
Winter is coming…and I couldn’t be more depressed or forlorn about it. Six months of frigid Arctic temps and snow up to our rooftops, the world blanketed in a coating of white stained birdshit from above. I loathe everything about it in every possible way.
Haha I feel the opposite; I’m a !wintercycling@lemmy.world weirdo 😅
Even though I ride in the winter, I hate winter. A lot.
The extra prep to go out, then stripping back layers because I’m sweating, then battling a runny nose and weepy eyes. Then the short days means riding in the dark or riding in the dark. Then the salt…
I much prefer spring and summer, even at 30C+. Way more enjoyable to be outside.
What do you wear? It got down to 50f here and I put my ebike away, the wind cut through my pants like I was wearing nothing.
Yeah the key is windproof. If you layer properly with windproof jacket, you can be super comfy with what’s in your closet. But, here’s what works well for me down to -5f (past that I start taking shorter rides)
- Windproof rain jacket (shell is ideal), and if it’s really cold (<10f) windproof or snow pants. Windproof upper layer is key
- Wool long johns and long wool socks. Normal non-cotton winter pants over that
- No cotton… you may get away with it on an ebike though as layering above wool long johns
- Bar mitts are awesome, anywhere below 50f, you can get cheap ones on amazon
- If you’re comfortable with it, it’s a lot easier to keep your head warm without a helmet imho. Just pull up a normal hoodie and then waterproof shell hoodie over that with a wool beanie and neck warmer you’ll be good down to 20f. Past that, a cheap face mask does wonders actually! Even down into the negatives (I figured that out during covid)
- Any frozen precipitation requires ski goggles. Clear is best imo and they can be pretty cheap.
- Windproof boots for below freezing and DO NOT tighten them up. You want to keep the blood flowing
Thick khakis with thin sweatpants underneath are a pretty good alternative to lined pants.
Like the other guy was saying, wool socks and a ski jacket also make a big difference.
It’s also possible to get completely comfy in 20° F with high wind, by either going the snowboarder route (earmuffs, goggles, etc) or by spending a bit more and get a full face longboarding or skydiving helmet (much lighter/smaller than a motorcycle helmet).
Ski helmets are also really good!
Something like this, doesn’t look too much out of place and you can remove padding and open vents a bit more if needed. Picked up non-mips version on sale some years ago for like 80e
Aw, ew, winter came all over the ground. Disgusting.
Welp, guess you gotta drive your car now.
My car isn’t reliable in the winter. It’s a newer car with a good health battery, but all the electronics drain the battery when I don’t use it much lol.
And fucking with a car battery when its 10f out sucks.
