Fro a quick glance this article is almost entirely from anonymous sources, one of the few exceptions seems to be… a Russian news agency, so I’m gonna go ahead and take this with a grain of salt.

It used to be that anonymous reporting just meant that they were protecting the informant. We used to be able to trust that major publications were vetting their informants and verifying information from multiple separate sources before reporting major stories.

Now that everything is about reporting as fast as possible for the 24/7 news cycle and Internet, regardless of initial accuracy, it’s impossible to tell if that’s the case or if the “journalist” doesn’t even know their source and credibility because it was completely anonymous.

If this is true, it wasn’t an attack on Russia, it was an attack on European infrastructure inside the Economic Exclusive Area of two European countries, that saw their waters contaminated with methane because of it. The pipelines weren’t being used, and probably they weren’t going to be used again for… well, ever, so it wasn’t even a source of income for Russia.

If these accusations are true, the attack only benefits Russia and everyone involved should be tried not only for the attack but for treason. In the case of Chervinsky I guess it’s more of adding it to his tab, since his hobby was apparently harming Ukraine by cosplaying as an Ukrainian James Bond.

Water doesn’t get “contaminated by methane.” Quit clutching those pearls so hard, you’ll break them.

I doubt these accusations are true because as you say it’s not something that really benefited Ukraine much, but if it does turn out to be the case then I’d just give a shrug on this one and let it slide. It’s reasonable to destroy Russian assets under these circumstances and no non-Russians were harmed in the process.
