Speaking of which, is there a way to find out the total number of subscribers to a community? I think I can only see the number on each particular instance.

I don’t know really. But I’ve seen a few of you regularly on this community and that makes me happy. Even if we’re here with the few of us, we can have some fun.

The only reason I was able to find this server is there was a discussion about it in the 24 hours before /r/synthesizers went down. So, if /r/synthesizers remains completely offline, I’m not sure how former /r/synthesizers users who weren’t online in the window this weekend would find this place… hm.

It all depends on us. Let’s do it. I think especially for smaller / niche communities like r/synthesizers Lemmy is perfect. Let the mainstream subs like r/gifs etc happen on reddit.

I think it’s more likely that they will go to Elektronauts, Modwiggler, etc. The barrier to entry to use Lemmy is relatively high, comparatively. An unclear structure, server issues everywhere due to the influx of users, etc.

I´m in a few discussions over at reddit about exactly this. No one can tell whats the hard part. It seems the only confusion is the multi server architecture and the calssic: do I have ot register onevery server then thing.

As I understand it, you can just sign up here and ignore the rest of the fediverse. If you want to use one account to access other instances and get an experience like full Reddit maybe it’s more complicated, but if you’re just here for synthesizer stuff it’s super simple.

Yeah it is thas why I dont get it. I already got most subs subscribed like on reddit directly form the community tab. It just took a while to federate them all.

            Its super nice.

I think this is exactly it. I had never even heard of Lemmy, and its structure, along with Mastodon’s (I’m not even sure how equivalent these two platforms are), are a bit alien. So I think, at least among people who are more familiar with message boards and the like, that’s th path of least resistance. Not that it’s actually difficult to register, but I can see why there may be such a perception.

I think so. I’ve only been on this thing a few days and it seems to be growing fast. One thing that seems to help is to subscribe to interesting communities on other instances to help other new people find them easier.

You should also check out some of the communities on lemmy.studio. It’s an instance for musicians that I think will pair nicely with this one.

Well, no, that gives me the number of subscribers on the instance from which I am viewing it. Not the total number. Case in point: !lemmy@lemmy.ml lists 232 subscribers when viewing the “All” list on feddit.de, but lists 6.15K when viewed directly on lemmy.ml.

Yeah this seems to be a larger fediverse issue. Mastodon is constantly telling me the number of related posts for a hashtag is way smaller than the actual number.

I think we will see communities across instances growing. I notice there are about five synth communities or so according to browse.feddit.de with the largest being this one and the one over at midwest.social. On desktop, I can see stats about the communities, but I’m not sure if mobile goes into much detail. Regardless, participation and just being here are what matters. Even if /r/synthesizers users do not find us, we already have a good thing going in my opinion.

Failed to hurt Reddit’s bottom line in a meaningful way? Yes. But we haven’t necessarily failed to create a good alternative for those of us who would rather not use Reddit anymore. It does seem like this place has become less active, which is a bit concerning, but I’m not giving up on it yet.

Probably, mostly. But it will be a different place in July, when many third-party apps will stop working. My favourite, Infinity, is switching to a paid subscription model.

I don’t really miss r/synthesizers, but I may still visit r/flying occasionally, as there is no comparable gathering of helpful and knowledgeable pilots and air traffic controllers here. Yet.
