First if all I want to say this app is pretty amazing. Even though it lacks features I find myself wanting to use it over any other Lemmy app.

I wanted to know whether there are plans to make the app open source?

I will personally not use a proprietary app if a open source alternative is available. I am willing to pay/donate if an app is open source (and have done so in the past).

Thanks in any case, even if I won’t end up using it I still think it’s gonna be a great option for a lot of people.

I totally understand that stance! I am still considering the right strategy to enable me to support Bean moving forward. I’ve spent a lot of time on the app and want to continue to moving forward with plans for other platforms, new features, and possible Kbin support.

Right now I’m swaying towards closed source with a subscription/IAP for premium features.

I’d appreciate a single IAP for most features, if possible. I’m sick to death of everything being some sort of subscription.

Of course, it’s totally up to you how you monetize the app.

@steve228uk @dsemy please dont go the subscription/iap route. I really love what you have got so far and I think there are ways we can support you without the app having to be limited to people who can afford that sort of thing / even have a card that is valid on their account

A single IAP would be ideal for me as a user, but I’d be on board with a subscription (in the $1-2/month range or yearly discounted plan like Apollo).

I tried a bunch of Lemmy apps, but this is the only one ticking all the boxes for me so far. All others always have 1 essential thing missing…

Monetization doesn’t mean an app can’t be open source. Especially on iOS, where sideloading apps is not something an average user really does.

But in the end it’s your app and your choice, and I respect it.
