I don’t think the excuses for Obama are helpful. Not now, and not then. Even when he was president, it was very clear that the issue needed to be settled by Congress, and he had the power to do it.
They had the presidency and Congress under Obama and Biden.
They didn’t act.
Also earlier this year democrats have tried codifying Roe but the GOP shut down
They had Congress under both Obama and Biden but didn’t act. Obama even said publicly Roe wasn’t a priority.
This is why I blame Democrats. The actions they do take are performative and symbolic. My personal opinion is that they have no intention to codify Roe because it’s an issue that brings in a significant amount of donation money on their behalf. (Also why you’ll never see Republicans ever support any kind of reasonable, constructive immigration plan. Our politicians are financially incentivized to let emotional issues linger.)
True, but they’re not the ones bearing the brunt of this issue, unfortunately.
There are so many high-profile assholes in this country named Eric.
It really is. The same people who say they oppose abortion bans are going to vote en masse for the Democratic Party in the fall, even though the Democratic Party has done nothing meaningful to restore Roe.
Having a great online gaming community can be a wonderful thing. I’ve returned over and over again to ALFA, a Neverwinter Nights (1, now Enhanced Edition, not NWN2) persistent world that’s over two decades old now, and me and a few lifers are still playing and DMing even today with each other.
Online friends are real friends.
If you aren’t already doing so, it’s time to start preparing for a total abortion ban. If you’re not someone who wants to conceive, get your tubes tied. If you need birth control, stockpile it if you can, same with the morning after pill.
Maybe we won’t face a total ban in the coming years, but I’m not sure how any reasonable person can look at the political developments in the US over the last four years and be optimistic.
Fair points all around.
It always makes me glad to see workers kick management in the dick, though.
Shit like this is what’s going to help Trump get elected.
It doesn’t matter how much you repeat the meme of ‘joy’ that the Harris campaign has fully embraced as their brand. Workers know full well how empty their dinner tables are and they live the extent to which the Democrats have failed them every single day.
He followed the killer cop script to a T, so of course, he’s going to get away with murder.
Friend, we’ve seen plenty of examples of laws that were passed with simple majorities. (The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act comes to mind.) The Democrats had that under Biden and Obama. Obama had a supermajority for seven months during his presidency. And yes, Obama himself said that Roe wasn’t a priority: https://www.reuters.com/article/markets/us/obama-says-abortion-rights-law-not-a-top-priority-idUSN29466420/
We’ve seen several examples of presidents actually willing to fight for what they believe in, and the presidency grants powers that can be used toward that end, like forcing Congress to stay in session for example. It was used to try and pass the National Civil Rights Act and emergency aid for Hurricane Katrina.
What we lack is Democrats who are actually willing to wield power, and because of that, we’re forced to confront the reality of fascism in the US.
It’s not me hurting the Dems by levying rightful criticism. It’s Democrats caring only about war and their own stock portfolios that have hurt themselves.
You’re right. I’m convinced.
It’s just too hard, and therefore, perfectly acceptable that Democrats do nothing except make promises, even when we hand them the power to make change.
Who was in control of Congress when Roe was repealed?
Which Democratic president had a supermajority, promised to codify Roe, and later said publicly it wasn’t a priority?
I don’t think excuses are acceptable at this point. It’s a matter of historical record that Democrats, when given the choice to codify privacy rights and bodily autonomy into law, instead elected not to do so. (I think, because it makes them a lot of money in donations.)
It’s true, and they will.
Idaho criminalized abortion while Dems were in power, and the Democrats did nothing to stop it. That means 2/3 of the states, which are controlled by Republicans, will follow suit.
If I were a woman I’d get my tubes tied before that becomes illegal.
A blowout jobs report Friday suggests the labor market is thriving, bucking fears that a recession was ahead. And the port strike — feared to cause widespread economic damage — is over.
I’ll concede that any of this supposedly good economic news is actually good economic news when it significantly impacts the poor and middle class, most of whom are working multiple jobs to survive. Until that day, any ‘good economic news’ is really just good news for the rich and people able to comfortably invest.
I couldn’t care less if they have remorse.
This is the stuff of fascists. This person committed a treasonous act out of the desire for a fascist state, and they deserve the long-term comforts of a prison cell for it.
