  • Charlemagne being known as “The Father of Europe” is fitting because he was a genocidal warlord.

    People often categorize the Norse Vikings as distinct from the Carolingian Empire because of their seasonal raiding, but the Franks were just as much of a warrior culture. The difference was that Vikings went on boats and acted somewhat autonomously (at least in the early Viking era), while the Franks had seasonal campaigns. Pretty much every year, the Franks would pick somewhere to go to war with and go raid and massacre them and haul the booty back to their churches and castles. But when the Vikings looted those Churches, which were bankrolled by bloodletting, the Norse were demonized.
