I long for the utopian future where I call customer support and a helpful, knowledgeable shrimp picks up the phone instead of some AI crap that doesn’t understand what I’m asking.

Linux@programming.dev•Linux 6.19 Gets Rid Of The Kernel's "Genocide" FunctionEnglish
49·3 days agoTo elaborate a bit: what that function does (well, tries to do - it has serious limitations, which is why there is only one caller remaining and that one is used only when nothing else can access the filesystem anymore) is “kill given dentry, along with all its children, all their children, etc.”
I sincerely doubt that you will be able to come up with any word describing such action in any real-world context that would not come with very nasty associations.
I feel like there could have been better names possible…
d_recursive_killperhaps? I’m certainly not an expert in this system but I find it challenging to believe that “genocide” was the only word that is adequately descriptive of the functionality. In fact, I’d argue it’s not that descriptive, given that genocide involves targeting some group of people based on some trait, like race, culture, disability, etc. - based on the description “kill given dentry, along with all its children, all their children, etc.” that doesn’t seem to fit…
perhaps I’m overthinking.
follow up work for any researchers: does shrimp understanding differ across WiFi versions? frequencies? other wireless protocols?
do they understand the concept of wired networking?
forget the AI bubble, invest now in the future of shrimp IT!

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What's the security situation when opening a jellyfin server up for casting?English
5·5 days agoI am not sure lol. perhaps your ssh port isn’t exposed to the internet, or maybe the bots are just ignoring you? maybe your hosting provider has some sort of security process to reject those attempts preemptively?
I have no clue

196@lemmy.blahaj.zone•What the rule have they done to captchasEnglish
10·12 days agothe worst imo is the one where they ask you to select which stack has the given number of rocks; you have to go through a bunch of images to find that stack.
then, you have to do it like five+ times, and if you fail you have to restart.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•If you live in Ohio, send in comments to support Columbus making it illegal to load, stop, stand, or park a motor vehicle in a bike lane!English
2·12 days agoAah! It’s a bit late (noon already passed), but I’m sending in an email anyway. Is there a website/post detailing the proposed changes? I can’t find anything so I’m just generally asking that they don’t allow parking in bus/bike lanes.
yes they’ll have both air intakes and exhaust
have we tried giving the AI Twix and cocaine yet? perhaps we just haven’t given it the chance. not sure where you’d put it in, maybe just smash it into the server rack?

Space@mander.xyz•Scientists Intrigued by Moss Surviving on Exterior of Space StationEnglish
21·18 days agothanks for clarifying, that’s a huge distinction vs. moss actually growing as implied by their phrasing and the image.
still cool that the spores survived, but much less remarkable.

Technology@beehaw.org•My Car Is Becoming a Brick: EVs are poised to age like smartphones.English
14·18 days agoyeah, you can’t really buy a car that doesn’t have mobile data for “telemetry” (your driving data is sold to insurance companies)
even base trims get some phone app stuff, meaning there’s the ability to execute commands on the car. so, if they really wanted, there’s nothing stopping automakers from bricking your car, gas or EV, because they feel like it.
yipee…

9·20 days ago“it’s all good guys, I just need to run doom!”

the article mentions 69 being skipped as well. I assume it’s pretty simple, just check it against the list and increment until it’s valid.
int getNextOrderNumber(int currentNumber) { currentNumber++; while(isBanned(currentNumber)) { currentNumber++; } return currentNumber; }where
bool isBanned(int orderNumber)simply checks the order number against the banned list and returns true if it’s not allowed.
