We have similar worries here in northern Ontario. The forests here basically lie in or are surrounded by wet swamps. But all that water is dependent on what happens in the winter and the snow. If we don’t get enough snow during the winter, there won’t be enough run off all spring and into the summer to keep the swamps wet … if the swamps aren’t wet enough, it dries out the forest … dry forest equals forest fires.
The same thing happens with the type of winter … we could have lots of snow but warm periods in the winter time that melts things and keeps the snow pack down … or spring arrives too early and too hot, melts everything too fast and leaves the forests dry by summer time.
We always have water up here but it only takes a small dip in snow accumulation and spring run off to dry out the forest sufficiently and create the conditions for forest fires. We approached those levels for the past few summers and squeezed by without major fires but every year that tipping point gets closer and closer.
Short answer is … as global warming keeps changing weather patterns … even though we still get freezing cold winters up here … every year, we’re in high danger of massive forest fires that will probably happen here in the coming decades. Once our forests dry out, we’re going to produce some of worst smoke events similar to what happened in 2023 and probably worse.
Take a nice deep breathe of fresh country air … and do it as often as you can … we might not have that luxury in the coming decades. :(

Don’t joke. I was at my wilderness cottage in northern Ontario about six years ago.
Bright blue sky, beautiful sun, warm air, no bugs … I was alone … the world was my own. Then a round white object the size of the full moon slowly drifted overhead. I thought maybe it was just some thing that was blowing by … a piece of garbage, plastic or even a party balloon. So I ignored it.
It stayed in place for an hour and I thought it was weird.
After hovering in place as clouds slowly started to move overhead … I became worried. It’s freaky to see an object stay in the same spot in the sky for eight hours and it isn’t the moon or the sun.
It stayed until sundown, then finally moved away.
I researched it and asked around about it days after.
Turns out it was a new experimental balloon system they launched from Timmins, Ontario. Some new system someone was developing to raise rockets into high altitude and launch them from there.
But for a few days I was really freaked out.

Don’t know … but who’s on third?

The English didn’t exactly make it very easy, negotiable, comfortable or convenient for either side … plus they were the ones who arbitrarily drew territorial lines and didn’t make it easy for anyone to negotiate. Almost as if the English wanted it all to fail from the start.
The English had a play toy that they owned for a long time but when it was finally taken away from them, they decided to just burn and break their toy rather than let the other kids enjoy it.

You can trade the cigarettes, vodka, half the meat and half the sugar in the black market to get more of everything else.
I got to know a few elderly people here in northern Ontario who grew up during the war years. They didn’t exactly have to ration things but things were definitely in short supply. So they ended up just either not drinking as much or giving up smoking because they were luxury items … then use your savings to buy more of everything else.
And as an Indigenous person … my parents grew up with very little. But you could live for months if you had good supply of flour, lard, sugar and tea. There is even a drink we made called tea ploss where you just made really strong tea, then mixed in flour, lard and sugar to make a quick energy drink without much fuss in the cold wilderness. Supplement all that with wild food and you had a healthy long term diet.

This is the kind of thing that happens when white people become afraid, angry or jealous

I think they’ll be needing another fire department to rescue these guys if they hurt themselves
