The movie glorified him and his death. It isn’t portrayed as needless or reckless. His death in the movie is framed as being a spiritual awakening, him finally leaving the material world behind and achieving enlightenment and that dying that way is something to aspire to. It was a dumb movie with hot people in places with exceptional natural beauty with a sloppy message which itself undercuts for mass appeal.
In long term they do have to bring some profit, otherwise they’re net negative to society.
You did, pretty succinctly. Profit is financial profit, that’s it’s definition. I think you mean a benefit which may or may not be profitable. Social services are beneficial to society, not always profitable.
Not everything in society needs to be profitable. Elder care is extremely unprofitable to society, they’ve already provided all the profit they can, now they’re just an expense on society. So why don’t we just drop them off in the middle of nowhere and let the animals eat them like a dying farm cat? It actually works out better because their kids can inherit the parents wealth without the parents using all that money to live through their retirement. The kids can take it the moment their parents are retired and immediately invest it. It’s way better for the economy because you won’t have a retirement investment that slowly dwindles until it’s gone. It’s a sudden infusion of cash that will pay way more dividends over time.

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK Your smoke detectors should be replaced every 7-10 years
3·10 days agoPlus new smoke detectors are usually also carbon monoxide detectors. So you get twice the peace of mind, cause carbon monoxide is a silent killer. It has no color, no odor, no warning signs at all. It’s happened where a whole family goes to bed and doesn’t wake up.
If it helps, most Hockey players are registered Republicans. Several have been very supportive of Trump. If you’re looking for an American sport that doesn’t protect pedophiles I suggest you take up horseshoes.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•This MF is quadrupling down and dropping Alien files before dropping the full, unredacted Epstein Files. GODDAMN.
1·15 days agoWhile the victims need to be protected, that’s not what Trump and the DOJ did. Rather than out the perpetrators and protect the victims, they outed the victims and are protecting the perpetrators. All because the people protecting the perpetrators, the perpetrators, and the officials in charge of this are all the same people. So yeah they already crossed that bridge backwards without shoes.

5·16 days agoWhile this (perhaps hypothetical) individual is definitely much better off than most people, they’re still closer to poverty than being in the wealth class. Seriously anyone who makes a million dollars a year USD or less is closer to poverty than being rich. We shouldn’t be taking our frustration out on people who are doing slightly better than ourselves. We should be fighting the billionaire class, and the political leaders who are in their pockets.
You differentiate yourself by being first. That’s partly why OpenAI and Sam Altmann are so fixated on bringing general AI to light. They know that if AGI is possible that the first one to reach it will see all the benefits. Second place gets nothing. Unfortunately it’s becoming more and more obvious that AGI is a dream and not actually possible.
Four Nazi-Blondes I think fits better
“Owned” as the definition we use no, but there definitely was a sense of ‘this is not yours, don’t use this’. I think the point that the speaker was trying to get across is that between people they considered the same as them there was no ownership. It wasn’t all peace and free love but it wasn’t being okay with watching a community member starve to death because they’re poor and therefore deserve it.

Honestly, they would probably say that Trump has lowered gas prices lower than any other President ever has and call you a traitor for suggesting anything that challenges that.
