MimicJar@lemmy.worldto Television@lemm.ee•‘Doctor Who’ Ratings Dive, Supercharging Uncertainty About Future Of Sci-Fi SeriesEnglish1·1 hour agoNo Daleks. No Cyber men.
Now maybe they’ll appear later, but it seems unlikely.
But even if they do… That’s fine?
When I watch Star Wars, I expect Jedi to show up at some point. They don’t need to 100% of the time, but that’s the universe. In Solo we get a brief tease of Maul, which flips the expectation. In Andor season 1 Luthen gifts Andor a Kyber crystal, and his ship does a lightsaber-like spin move. In Season 2 we have the Force healer. In Rogue One we have Chirrut who repeats, “I am one with the Force, the Force is with me.”
When I watch Doctor Who I expect certain things. Obviously The Doctor, a companion, the Tardis, the sonic screwdriver. I expect to see long time enemies like Daleks, Cyber men or maybe The Master. The Doctor has a mysterious past involving Gallifrey. I know when The Doctor dies, he regenerates.
Is it all a bit of a trope? Yes. Is that fine? Yes.
Oh yeah!
See this is why I don’t talk much.
Correct!

Rings of Power would have been cancelled after season 1 on most services, maybe a 2nd season, but certainly cancelled after that. But Amazon? They’re in it.
Plus they can throw money at the right projects. Fallout was excellent. The Boys and the spinoffs Gen V was solid. Invincible is one of their best shows.
They’ve also been funding the more niche Vox Machina. They’ve been able to get big talent like Donald Glover and for Mr & Mrs Smith, while also keeping Phoebe Waller-Bridge around, paying her just to see what she comes up with.
Also they’re not slowing down. They’ve paid a shit ton to get the rights to James Bond. They’re funding a Warhammer 40K TV series.
They are throwing money at this until it works. It’s a big dartboard and they have a lot of darts. They’re going to hit a few big points.
But… They’re going to miss a lot too.
It’s not his fault they removed telephone booths.
MimicJar@lemmy.worldto Television@lemm.ee•‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ and ‘Citadel’ Hit Syndication for the First TimeEnglish3·1 day agoSo it’s a puff piece but basically people don’t choose Amazon streaming. Which makes sense since it’s the worst of the streaming services.
Basically most of their users are probably Amazon Prime users and they failed to convince those users, who are already paying for the service, that it was worth using. So in an accident to recoup costs they added ads. Which of course further pushes users away. Now they’re going to sell their shows to other networks (18 months later), because Amazon streaming isn’t bringing in new users.
For what it’s worth Amazon seems like they’ll keep throwing money at the problem. And that money can result in great shows being made. They’re hoping for their water cooler must see show moment… But their brand just doesn’t work.
MimicJar@lemmy.worldto Television@lemm.ee•‘Doctor Who’ Ratings Dive, Supercharging Uncertainty About Future Of Sci-Fi SeriesEnglish353·1 day agoI’m genuinely confused by this, the current season of Doctor Who has been excellent. The episodes have been memorable, I’m interested in the overarching story they’ve been building up, solid companions, and a great Doctor.
Homer clearly covered himself. Correct!

The truck is to have three accounts. One to post. One ask, “Where do I get this!?!?!?”, and a third to post the link.
MimicJar@lemmy.worldto Television@lemm.ee•What are you watching and, what do you recommend this week?English2·2 days agoIt helps that, for some reason, most of the cast never hit it big(ger).
Charlie Cox did little between the end of Netflix Daredevil and his cameo in Spider-Man. Once he was in Spider-Man I’m sure he kept his schedule generally open as things ramped up for the new show.
Vincent D’Onofrio, same boat.
Jon Bernthal had a little better luck, but again basically the same boat.
MimicJar@lemmy.worldto Television@lemm.ee•George R. R. Martin's New Announcement Has Finally Made Me Accept He's Never Finishing The Winds Of WinterEnglish9·2 days agoExactly. Imagine if season two started with Stannis’s shadow murdering Renly. Then next episode Stannis attacks Kings Landing and Rob marries Talisa. Third episode is the Red Wedding. Fourth episode is the Purple Wedding. Fifth episode is Tyrion’s trial and Oberyn’s fight. Then we end with season short with the battle at the wall and Jon dies.
That would be an action packed but ultimately terribly confusing and paced season. All those events, when spread out over several episodes and seasons are excellent and exciting moments.
The first three books (roughly first four seasons) are the end of the first act of the story. The next two books are just the start of the second act of the story. The world grew. The world expanded. A time jump was added and then removed, and that’s where the problems started. The show needed to start working towards an ending, but the story wasn’t going that way.
I think in a world where the television series was never made, George would have likely finished the series by now. It’s difficult to sit in your house and type out a story while everyone is outside your house having fun and yelling at you to come outside.
This isn’t to absolve George. He’s a professional, he should have finished, but I get it.
People always forget this classic Simpsons tune.
MimicJar@lemmy.worldto Star Wars Memes@lemmy.world•Willrow Hood: A Star Wars StoryEnglish2·2 days agoI’d watch. I bet he and Bib Fortuna got in fights.
Actually was Crumb on the barge in RotJ? Did he just become Bib’s pet? Did Bib kick him out? Is he Boba’s pet now? Given that he appears to have a first and last name, I’m assuming he’s sentient, right? Or is he more like a parrot?
Edit: He was on the barge in RotJ. But everyone said Bib was dead and we discovered he was alive (briefly).
I thought I knew, but the character I’m thinking of has a red arm.
It’s just lions while traveling locally.
You know it!
Correct!
MimicJar@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Rep. Gerry Connolly, top Democrat on House Oversight Committee, dies at 7542·3 days agoI don’t think it’s simply a matter of holding power.
“I’ve never had my chance to be a ranking member or a chairman of a full committee. This is it.”
It’s this idea of “my turn”.
Connolly put in the time, he played by the rules, it’s his turn. Conceptually I get it. It’s what’s fair.
The problem is, we don’t live in that reality anymore, maybe we never did. We want to move forward. We don’t want to wait for “our turn”. We can’t afford to wait as things fall apart around us. Problems get worse the longer we wait.
Joe Biden had the view of riding out the storm. Trump, MAGA, etc are just a blip, everything will go back to normal. He was absolutely wrong. We have a generation of Democrats who are horribly out of touch with reality.
It’s the Kryptonian Torture Jack.
