I don’t know about Steam OS but with EndeavourOS, you still have to keep an eye on the Arch news and make any manual interventions that are required. If you don’t, you can end up with a broken system. If you do that, it’s utterly reliable.
Yeah, I’m not defending Manjaro, they are too sloppy for me to do that. Rather EndeavourOS and CachyOS and similar which either give you a working Arch install with minimal effort or add something that may be of value to Arch. That said, the Manjaro distro itself is pretty good, especially if you swap the unstable repos which mirror the Arch ones. Kind of defeats the point of Manjaro though.

Because Gnome Shell is terrible! Or, people just want to use their computer and not have to learn a whole new way to do it. Most desktops understand this.
I generally prefer GUIs, but sometimes the terminal is just easier!
