politics @lemmy.world•Pentagon warns Scouts: Ban girls or we will pull your funding
7·13 hours agoWTF does the Pentagon have to do with the BSA.
IOW we’ve already stolen everything we think is of value and want to pull up the ladder on any competitors.
Gotta be a pickup.
Edit: went looking. It’s actually a Chevy Caprice outfitted as a cab, that’s why the aftermarket large dome light. Here’s the scene.

News@lemmy.world•New Mexico warns against consuming raw milk after newborn dies from listeria
1·1 day agoBecause of the typical incomplete and cherrypicked argument they cite that people get sick and die from pasteurized milk anyway.
While it’s completely true that people do get sick from outbreaks in pasteurized milk over time, there is no perfect system, the millions and millions of people who consume pasteurized dairy vs the thousands that dare to drink unpasteurized milk per capita objectively and obviously wildly points out that pasteurized is ridiculous orders of magnitude safer than raw milk.
But in typical willfully ignorant fashion, they ignore the science and dive into some nebulous and BS health benefits of raw milk while ignoring the game of death roulette they play.

Technology@lemmy.world•Intel announced plans to start making GPUs, challenging NVIDIA's dominanceEnglish
88·13 hours agoOh great, some wildly overpriced and underperforming GPUs.
Edit: went looking at Intel’s desktop GPUs and found this gem:
Powerful AI Engines
Unlock new AI experiences with up to 233 TOPS of AI engine performance for content creation, real-time AI chat, editing, and upscaled gaming.3
And checked out the specs for performance of Intel’s top cards (B580/A770) against a basic 3080 card (no OC/TI, whatever) and the intel cards ranked well below the older 3080, and weren’t even in the ballpark against upper tier 4- and 5- series Nvidia cards. Plus missing features like DLSS, etc.
Good enough for non-FPS dependent gaming? Sure. Can’t beat the price, I was wrong about that. Want to play high-FPS demanding twitch gaming? No.

5·2 days agoThey’re on X, and I refuse to install it to guess at this person’s age. From the look of it they’re in their 20’s/30’s, so I think they’re one of the exceptions to the rule that most young people don’t know shit about computers.
Hell, even my kids don’t understand that mobile phones, slates, car stereos, gaming consoles, and even musical greeting cards can be computers. To them a computer is a desktop PC. They’re getting there, though.

Europe@feddit.org•Russian spy spacecraft have intercepted Europe’s key satellites, officials believeEnglish
2·3 days agoNeed them to fire “parachutes” at satellites. The material will change the center of mass making the satellite difficult to control, obscure antenna and solar panels, and increase the small amounts of drag satellites experience causing them to use more fuel trying to correct orientation and de-orbit far sooner. No extra debris in orbit.
Yes, and those same companies in the US would have massive budget shortfalls should trump interfere in private business and cut them off from customers. Europe would recover and permanently move away from US services and the US would take a big economic hit.
More “winning” by fucking his own country over. Maybe he’ll short the stocks and make another billion on the back of the economy he’s ruining.

PieFed Meta@piefed.social•Should we revisit the instance picker to have an easier default choice?
92·3 days agoThis person is bordering on willfully obstinate. Any time you sign up for a service there are choices to be made. Social media will ask you to pick people or subjects to follow, sites will want you to pick communications preferences, etc.
Pick one server. Make the account. Don’t like it? Pick another. It doesn’t matter, there’s no karma here to hoard. Abandon that account you don’t like. Pick three. It’s like people can’t handle the freedom of choice.
At least caramelize the onions and melt the cheese first.

Technology@lemmy.world•Elon Musk Is Rolling xAI Into SpaceX—Creating the World’s Most Valuable Private CompanyEnglish
17·3 days agoAbsolutely. And if the AI market takes a hit it will barely affect a government contracted space program that will get a taxpayer funded bailout if it has any trouble at all.

They’ll cave on whatever it is before it comes to a national strike.
